Ladders
Aluminium Ladders and Fibreglass Ladders for Trade and Industry
Aluminium Platforms stocks aluminium and fibreglass ladders across the full range of trade and industrial applications. The range covers step ladders, extension ladders, platform ladders, multi-purpose ladders, telescopic ladders, and industrial-rated models for heavy-duty site use.
Brands stocked include Indalex, Bailey, Star Aluminium, and Staruiju. Each brand covers different segments: Indalex for industrial and warehousing, Bailey for trade and construction, Staruiju for budget-conscious commercial buyers, and Star Aluminium for custom and heavy-platform applications.
Choosing the right ladder
The main factors are working height, load rating, and material. Aluminium ladders are lighter and more durable for most applications. Fibreglass ladders are required where electrical non-conductivity is needed.
Load ratings: 120kg (domestic/light-duty), 150kg (trade), 180kg (industrial). Select based on the heaviest combined weight of user, tools, and materials during use. In commercial and industrial environments, a minimum of 150kg trade rating is recommended. Where the work is ongoing and the environment is demanding, 180kg industrial models provide additional capacity and longer service life.
Step ladders
Step ladders are self-supporting and do not require a leaning surface. Single-sided step ladders provide access from one side; double-sided models allow access from either side and are useful in open environments where the ladder must be repositioned frequently.
Extension ladders
Extension ladders extend to a specified working height and lean against a vertical surface. They are the standard access tool for roofing, exterior maintenance, and facade work. The ladder must be positioned at a safe angle (approximately 75 degrees from horizontal) and extend at least 1 metre above the landing point.
Platform ladders
Platform ladders add a standing platform and handrail to the top of a step ladder configuration. They allow hands-free working at height and are useful for shelf stocking, installation work, and tasks that require stability.
Industrial and warehouse ladders
Industrial environments require 180kg-rated models with robust construction suited to frequent use. Indalex Pro Series and Bailey FS industrial step and extension ladders cover these requirements. For environments where a ladder is used for extended work at height, consider a work platform rather than a ladder for improved stability and operator comfort.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a 150kg and 180kg rated ladder?
A 150kg trade-rated ladder is designed for regular use by one tradesperson including their tools and clothing. A 180kg industrial-rated ladder has a heavier frame construction and higher safety factor, designed for continuous use in demanding industrial environments. In commercial and construction settings, 150kg is the standard minimum. In manufacturing, utilities, and heavy industry, 180kg is preferred.
Do I need a fibreglass ladder for electrical work?
If you are working in proximity to live electrical equipment, overhead power lines, or energised switchboards, a non-conductive fibreglass ladder is the appropriate choice. Aluminium conducts electricity. Fibreglass does not under working conditions. Many electricians carry both a fibreglass ladder (for work around live circuits) and an aluminium ladder (for general access work away from energised equipment).
What is a safe working height for a ladder?
The maximum comfortable working height from a standard step ladder is typically the step ladder height plus about 1.4 metres (assuming you stand no higher than the second-from-top step and can reach overhead). Extension ladders should extend at least 1 metre above the landing point and be set at approximately a 1-in-4 ratio (1 metre out for every 4 metres of height). For tasks requiring extended work at height above 1.5 metres, a work platform provides a safer and more stable working position.
Which brands do you stock and what is the difference?
We stock Bailey, Indalex, Star Aluminium, and Staruiju. Bailey covers trade and construction with a strong fibreglass range. Indalex covers trade and industrial with a broad aluminium and fibreglass range. Star Aluminium specialises in heavy-duty work platforms rather than portable ladders. Staruiju provides a cost-effective commercial option for warehouses and light industrial use. Contact our team if you need help choosing between brands for your application.
